From DamavandPro, these Ribwort Plantain Seeds (Plantago lanceolata) are a resilient choice for adding a low-growing perennial herb to meadows, naturalised areas and wildlife gardens. With distinctive lance-shaped, ribbed leaves that form a basal rosette, ribwort plantain brings subtle structure to mixed planting and can also suit flowering lawns thanks to its ability to withstand mowing.
Flowering from April to August, the plant produces brown flower spikes on tall, unbranched stalks, reaching heights of 50-75cm. Valued since ancient times, the leaves can be used raw in salads or cooked as a pot herb, and the plant is noted as being rich in vitamin B1 and riboflavin. Ribwort plantain also plays an important role in diverse grassland ecosystems, acting as a host plant for Glanville and Heath Fritillary butterflies and providing food for wildlife through its leaves and seeds. It is also referenced as tortoise food.
Sow on the surface of moist, free-draining soil and lightly cover. Seeds typically germinate within 3 weeks, though germination can be slow and erratic.
