This collection brings together 11 books from Jim Smith’s Barry Loser series, published by Dean Books. The stories follow Barry Loser as he deals with school, family life and friendships, often with his own running commentary on the chaos around him.
Across the set, Barry faces a new pupil who teases him about his surname, a falling-out with his best friend Bunky, and the arrival of a new baby brother, Desmond Loser the Second. There are also misadventures involving a caravan holiday to Plonkton, Pirate Camp, a school trip to a history of television exhibition, and Barry’s attempt to manage Bunky’s football success. The collection also includes a companion activity-style book packed with additional content.
Barry has never worried about being called Loser, until a new boy joins his school and starts making his life difficult about it.
After a dream leaves Barry annoyed with his best friend Bunky, a new problem appears when Gordon Smugly steals Bunky’s attention. Barry tries to win his friend back, runs a girly-screamvoice test, and attempts to avoid seeing his teacher kissing his gran.
Barry’s mum becomes a celebrity after winning The Voice of Feeko’s competition, and Barry can’t escape posters of her. With his napkin collection, new girl Nancy Verkenwerken and a snail called Snailypoos, he sets out to prove he is not a loser.
Barry is used to being the “loserkeelest”, until Fay Snoggles arrives and starts getting more laughs than him. Barry comes up with a plan that involves thirty boxes of Beard Flakes.
Barry invites his friends on his family caravan holiday to Plonkton, expecting a brilliant weekend by the sea. Instead, things go wrong when Bunky falls in love.
With his parents busy looking after his new baby brother, Desmond Loser the Second, Barry feels overlooked. A new drink from Feeko’s Supermarket keeps him going until disaster strikes, and Barry turns detective to solve the case of the crumpled carton.
Barry’s dad sends him to Pirate Camp during the half-term holidays, even though Barry insists he is not a baby. The camp has been taken over by Morag, and Barry and new friends Sally Bottom and Renard Dupont try to uncover the hidden treasure of Mogden Island.
Barry’s birthday present is the gaming helmet he wanted, The Shnozinator 9000. His excitement doesn’t last when his baby brother breaks it.
Barry expects a class trip to a history of television exhibition to be terrible, until he discovers a favourite show is filmed at the same studios. He tries to sneak away to find the set and hopes for a chance to audition.
Barry is thrown out of the Mogden Maniacs for being “completeerly rubbish”, then becomes manager when Bunky turns out to be a star striker. With the cup final approaching, Barry tries to keep Bunky grounded as his football fame grows.
This paperback brings the Ultimate Book of Keelness together with new content, including jokes, animal mash-ups and a “Which Loser are you?” quiz. It also includes the short stories “Bunky is a Loser” and “My Dad is a Loser”, editions of the Daily Poo, a Q&A with Jim, plus drawing guides and activities.
