Together, they bring practical perspectives on garden design and conservation-minded gardening, with a focus on planting approaches that respond to changing conditions and encourage a lively outdoor space.

RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening is a fully revised and updated edition of a best-selling guide that was first published as How to Make a Wildlife Garden and launched at the 1985 Chelsea Flower Show. Synopses

RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening

First launched at the 1985 Chelsea Flower Show, this best-selling guide helped bring wildlife gardening into the mainstream. Fully revised and updated, it is newly illustrated and reflects changes in garden wildlife over the past 35 years.

Drawing on RHS research and updated best practice, it also discusses controversial conservation issues and celebrates the range of wild plants and animals that can bring a garden to life.

Drought-Resistant Planting

Beth Chatto recounts the creation of her gravel garden on what she described as “possibly the driest, and the most windswept” soil in England. From the beginning, she set a rule that the garden would not be irrigated during drought, and that once established the plants would need to survive unaided.

The results are described by the author and shown in specially commissioned photographs by Steven Wooster, taken through the seasons.
