This three-book collection brings together Gillian Hick’s veterinary memoirs, following her work as a newly qualified veterinary surgeon and beyond. Across the series, she describes the realities of mixed animal practice in Wicklow and regular trips to inner city Dublin, where she also works in the Bluecross animal welfare clinic.
From demanding call-outs and unpredictable cases to the pressures created by clients, colleagues and family life, the books chart a varied working routine with animals of many kinds. The set includes Vet on the Loose, Vet on a Mission and Vet among the Pigeons, each recounting challenging situations and the effort involved in balancing professional responsibilities with life at home.
Gillian Hick recounts early experiences as a newly qualified veterinary surgeon, moving between inner city Dublin and the wilds of Wicklow. The book describes a range of difficult cases and the people she meets, from animal owners to those who question her role, as she relies on humour to get through demanding days.
With the arrival of her third child approaching, Gillian decides to leave mixed practice and set up a small animal clinic from home. Help arrives when neighbouring farmer John Armstrong stays on to build the new clinic, but the realities of running a twenty-four/seven on-call business begin to bite. The account follows night-time emergencies, new arrivals and final farewells as she tries to keep going with support from her husband and three pre-school children.
Continuing her story, Gillian is no longer a “green” graduate, yet still finds herself tested by animals and owners in ways not covered in textbooks. Based in a mixed animal practice in Wicklow, she also travels regularly to Dublin to work in the Bluecross clinic, and finds it difficult to combine both roles. Her cases range widely, alongside an expanding young family and her efforts to improve her skills and justify her place in the profession.
