Southern Railway steam-era history is captured in this Hornby H Class 0-4-4T model, finished as No. 1552 in SR service. The prototype was built at Ashford Works in January 1905 as SE/CR No. 552 and entered traffic at Maidstone West. After Grouping it carried A552, then became 1552 under the July 1931 renumbering scheme while allocated to Bricklayers Arms.
Designed by Harry Wainwright, the locomotive later saw storage after Nationalisation, a brief reinstatement in early 1953, and a return to traffic at Tonbridge in October 1953 as 31552, including a short period fitted with a push-pull motor. Withdrawal followed in November 1961 while allocated to Ashford. This 00 gauge model is DCC ready and specified for a minimum R2 curve, making it a considered choice for Era 3 (1923–1947) layouts and collections.
