Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern InterCity travel from 1989 onwards. This Hornby model recreates a Mk4 Standard Coach in Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) livery, numbered 12444, as an authentically replicated addition to a model railway collection.
Built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, the real Mk4 fleet brought notable advances over the Mk3, including push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. The design drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with profiled sides intended to allow tilt of up to 6° when paired with newly fitted tilting bogies. Following privatisation, the coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive InterCity East Coast franchise operators, with refurbishment work carried out by Bombardier Transportation under GNER’s ‘Project Mallard’ programme.
