The prototype entered British Rail service in 1965 as D6991, later becoming 37291 in 1974. Rebuilt as a Class 37/4 and renumbered 37419 in 1985, it went on to work in Scotland with the Provincial General Pool before allocation to Thornaby in the Railfreight Construction sub-sector. Further service followed under EWS and Direct Rail Services, and it remains part of the Harry Needle Railroad Co. hire fleet, stored serviceable at Barrow Hill.
