Developed for express passenger duties, the LNER Thompson Class A2/3 reflects Edward Thompson’s drive to standardise locomotive design following Sir Nigel Gresley’s death in April 1941. Built to a similar specification to the A2/2 rebuilds, the A2/3 differed in cylinder sizes and boiler pressure, and used Thompson’s divided drive arrangement: the middle cylinder drove the forward two of the six driving wheels, while the outside cylinders drove the middle two. To allow standard connecting rods across all cylinders, the middle cylinder sat further forward than usual, with the outside cylinders positioned further back behind the leading bogie.
This Hornby model represents LNER No. 511 Airbourne, built at Doncaster Works and introduced in July 1946. Following nationalisation it was renumbered 60511, allocated to Heaton engine shed, and withdrawn in November 1962.
