Hornby recreates Thompson Class A2/2 4-6-2 No. 60502 ‘Earl Marischal’ in BR livery as a steam locomotive model with a strong link to LNER rebuilding history. The prototype began life as P2 No. 2002 and was rebuilt to A2/2 in June 1944, later carrying the numbers 502 in 1946 and 60502 after the nationalisation of the railways.
As part of Edward Thompson’s programme, the A2/2 rebuilds introduced divided drive and a revised cylinder arrangement to support standard connecting rods across all cylinders. ‘Earl Marischal’ returned to Scotland following rebuilding, then transferred to York Shed at the end of 1949, remaining in service until withdrawal in 1961. A considered addition for Hornby railway collections focused on LNER and BR-era motive power.
