This four-book collection brings together novels by Jennifer Mathieu: Moxie, The Truth About Alice, The Liars and Devoted. Across the set, the stories focus on young people as they navigate school life, community expectations, and the effects of rumours, control and inequality.

From an anonymously distributed zine that grows into something larger, to a town consumed by speculation after a fatal car accident, the books consider how voices can be shaped, silenced or amplified. The collection also spans a summer on Mariposa Island marked by family tension and first love, alongside a tightly controlled community where one girl begins to question the future laid out for her.

Synopses

Moxie

Vivian Carter is frustrated by her school’s double standards, including sexist dress codes, harassment and comments in class. Inspired by her mother’s Riot Grrrl past, she creates a feminist zine called Moxie and shares it anonymously. As other girls respond, what began as a private outlet spreads, and Vivian finds new friendships across social divides as a wider “girl revolution” takes shape.

The Truth About Alice

Alice Franklin becomes the target of rumours, and after star quarterback Brandon Fitzsimmons dies in a car accident, the gossip intensifies and blames Alice for his death. Four students from Healy High recount what they know: the party girl, the car accident survivor, the ex best friend and the boy next door. The question remains what the truth about Alice is, and what she would say herself.

The Liars

Each year, summer begins when the Callahans arrive on Mariposa Island, and Elena Finney finds escape from her unstable, controlling mother by babysitting their two children. In the summer of 1986, she meets J.C., the new boy in town, and is swept up by their connection. Her brother Joaquin, newly graduated, wants to leave the island for California to find his father and get away from their mother’s manipulation.

Devoted

Rachel Walker lives within a family and community that has turned away from the world, controlling what she reads, wears and where she goes. Her parents set out a future of marriage, modesty, children and obedience. When a former member who escaped returns to their small Texas town, Rachel begins to see her life differently and questions whether she can find the courage to fight for it.
