Stephen Fry’s Greek Myths Series Collection brings together three retellings of classical stories: Troy, Heroes and Mythos. Published by Michael Joseph, this three-book set presents well-known myths in Fry’s vivid narrative style, moving between the world of gods and mortals and the events that shape legendary history.

Across the collection, the stories range from the origins and intrigues of the Olympians to the feats, failures and sacrifices of celebrated figures, and the long, brutal conflict surrounding the siege of Troy. The set draws on dramatic episodes, riddles and battles, alongside moments of wonder and tragedy, to revisit myths that continue to resonate in the modern age.

Synopses

Troy

The story begins with the kidnapping of Helen, a queen famed for her beauty, and the Greek response as they launch a vast fleet against Troy. The city is placed under siege for ten years of violent conflict. War is set in motion when Zeus asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess, and Aphrodite offers him Helen, the wife of King Menelaus.

Heroes

In this companion to Mythos, Stephen Fry retells dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales. The book follows Jason on the Argo in pursuit of the Golden Fleece, Atalanta’s unmatched speed and the trick involving golden apples, and Oedipus as he solves the riddle of the Sphinx. It also recounts Bellerophon capturing Pegasus and facing the monster Chimera, alongside chases, battles, puzzles, cowardice, bravery, murders and sacrifices.

Mythos

Stephen Fry’s retelling includes the birth of Athena from the head of Zeus and Persephone’s descent into the Underworld. It revisits Pandora opening her jar of torments and the love story of Eros and Psyche. Mythos presents these myths for a modern age, emphasising their human relevance.
