Johann Hari Collection brings together three books by internationally bestselling author Johann Hari: Stolen Focus, Chasing the Scream and Lost Connections. Each title follows a journey of investigation, drawing on interviews and research to challenge widely held assumptions about attention, addiction, and the rise of depression and anxiety.

Across the set, Hari explores how personal struggles are often framed as individual failings, and instead examines the wider forces and causes that shape modern life. From attention spans in teenagers and office workers, to questions about what drives addiction, to evidence for multiple causes behind depression and anxiety, these books present a rethought approach to understanding complex issues.

Synopses

Stolen Focus

Hari investigates why teenagers can focus on one task for only 65 seconds, and why office workers on average manage only three minutes. Drawing on interviews with leading experts on attention, he argues that common beliefs about focus are mistaken. The book challenges the idea that difficulty concentrating is a personal flaw, suggesting instead that external forces have shaped this change.

Chasing the Scream

Beginning with an early memory involving a relative, Hari reflects on addiction within his family and the questions it raised for him. He then undertakes a three-year, thirty-thousand mile journey to explore what really causes addiction. The book also considers how addiction might be addressed.

Lost Connections

Hari examines why depression and anxiety are now at epidemic levels. He points to evidence for nine different causes, including some rooted in biology and others linked to the way people live today. The book proposes a different way of thinking about the crisis and suggests that understanding the causes can open the door to new solutions.
