Synopsis

Miró describes his aim as “maximum clarity, power, and plastic aggressiveness”, seeking a physical sensation followed by a psychological impact. The lithographic medium, the text suggests, both suited and sharpened his long-standing drive to strip art back to its essentials, while supporting bold experimentation and innovation alongside his work in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking.

The 40 plates reproduced here draw from a series produced in 1944, characterised by eerie imagery and droll distortion. Executed shortly after the well-known “constellation” paintings and around the time of his mother’s death and his first ceramic firings with Artigas, these prints are presented as a significant moment in his career, extending lithographic technique and demonstrating his command of black-and-white.
