Henderson’s Boys is a seven-book collection by Robert Muchamore, set during the Second World War. Beginning in summer 1940 as Hitler’s army advances towards Paris, the series follows British spy Charles Henderson as he becomes involved with children drawn into covert work amid the upheaval of war.

Across occupied France and wartime Britain, Henderson and his young agents face missions that involve gathering intelligence, evading German agents and undertaking dangerous operations behind enemy lines. As the conflict develops from 1940 through to summer 1944, the stories move from escape and survival to sabotage and high-risk assignments where, for official purposes, the children do not exist.

Synopses

The Escape

Summer 1940. With millions of French civilians fleeing as the German army advances towards Paris, two British children are hunted by German agents. British spy Charles Henderson races to reach them, relying on the help of a twelve-year-old French orphan. The British secret service begins to realise that children working undercover can help to win the war, and for official purposes these children do not exist.

Eagle Day

In 1940, Charles Henderson is the last British spy left in occupied France, living near Calais with four runaway children. While translating for the German high command, they send information to Britain about Nazi plans to invade England in September, on Eagle Day. With Northern France heavily defended and invasion barges hard to target at night, Henderson and his team devise a plan to guide British bombers to their target.

Secret Army

Britain 1941. The government is building a secret army of intelligence agents to work undercover, gathering information and planning sabotage. Henderson’s boys, children cut adrift by the war, train for dangerous work that includes parachuting into unknown territory, travelling cross-country and outsmarting adults in a daredevil exercise. In wartime Britain, anything goes.

Grey Wolves

Spring 1941. German submarines prowl the North Atlantic, sinking ships carrying the food, fuel and weapons Britain needs. With the Royal Navy losing the war at sea, six young agents must enter Nazi-occupied Europe and sabotage a submarine base on France’s western coast. If the submarines are not stopped, the British people will starve.

The Prisoner

One of Henderson’s best agents is held captive in Frankfurt. Forged record cards could offer a route to freedom, but may also become a death warrant. A vital mission awaits in France, if he can find a way to escape.

One Shot Kill

Spring 1943. As the war turns against Germany, scientists work in a secret bunker in occupied France on Hitler’s latest weapon, code name FZG-76. Back in England, Henderson’s boys undergo advanced sniper training in preparation for infiltrating the bunker. After parachuting into occupied France, they track down a secret dossier and uncover the meaning of the code, while remaining officially non-existent.

Scorched Earth

Summer 1944. As Allied soldiers prepare to land in France, Marc and his friends must destroy a battalion of German tanks that could halt the invasion. With the tide turning against the Nazis and supplies running short, Henderson’s Boys face their final mission, where survival is the biggest challenge of all.
