The Complete Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Boxset by Douglas Adams brings together five stories in one collection, presented with a new cover. The set follows Arthur Dent as his life is repeatedly upended by events on an intergalactic scale, beginning with the sudden demolition of Earth and continuing through a series of unpredictable escapes, encounters and catastrophes.
Across the boxset, everyday concerns sit alongside questions of space, time and existence, from the challenge of finding a simple cup of tea to deciding where to have dinner when the biggest mysteries have been resolved. Arthur’s travels take him from prehistoric Earth to Lord’s cricket ground, and on to distant planets, as he is drawn into missions, reunions and searches that refuse to stay straightforward for long.
One Thursday lunchtime, Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a hyperspace express route. Arthur Dent, already dealing with the demolition of his house that same morning, finds the situation escalating fast. The weekend has only just begun, and the galaxy offers countless ways to be blown up or insulted, while a decent cup of tea remains hard to come by.
With questions of space, time, matter and the nature of being resolved, one problem remains: where to have dinner. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe promises the ultimate gastronomic experience. For once, there is no morning after to worry about.
After a number of catastrophes, Arthur Dent is surprised to find himself living in a miserable cave on prehistoric Earth. Just as he thinks things cannot get worse, an eddy in the space-time continuum drops Arthur, Ford Prefect and their flying sofa into Lord’s cricket ground, two days before the world is due to be destroyed by the Vogons.
Escaping the end of the world for a second time, Arthur, Ford and Slartibartfast reluctantly set out on a mission to save the galaxy from fanatical robots.
Arthur Dent believes he is the only human to have mastered the knack of flying: learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Then he meets Fenchurch, the woman of his dreams, who once understood how the world could be made a good and happy place, but has forgotten. Convinced the secret lies within God’s Final Message to His Creation, they go in search of it and, breaking with tradition, actually find it.
Arthur Dent settles on the small planet Lamuella, embracing his role as a Sandwich Maker. His quiet plans are disrupted by the unexpected arrival of his daughter, and the trouble that comes with a frustrated teenager carrying a copy of the Hitchhiker’s Guide. When she runs away, Arthur follows, determined to protect her from the universe’s horrors, many of which he has already encountered.
