The Joubert Family Chronicles Collection brings together three novels by Kate Mosse: The City of Tears, The Burning Chambers and The Ghost Ship. Set against periods of conflict and uncertainty, the collection follows events spanning France and beyond, with stories that centre on danger, secrecy and shifting loyalties.

Across the three books, readers are taken from Carcassonne in 1562 to France in 1572 during the Wars of Religion, and onwards to the Barbary Coast in 1621. Each title introduces its own unfolding situation, from an anonymous letter delivered to a bookshop, to a fragile peace shaped by a royal wedding, to a vessel under attack on open water.

Synopses

The Ghost Ship

On the Barbary Coast in 1621, a mysterious vessel drifts on the water, known only as the Ghost Ship. Its captain, Louise Reydon-Joubert, and her crew have spent months hunting pirates to free those taken during raids. Now the ship is under attack, with its hull damaged, sails burnt, and the crew facing capture.

The City of Tears

In May 1572, the Wars of Religion have raged across France for ten years, turning neighbours into enemies and leaving the country divided over religion, citizenship and sovereignty. With peace hanging in the balance, a royal wedding is arranged. The marriage offers the possibility of reuniting France.

The Burning Chambers

In Carcassonne in 1562, nineteen-year-old Minou Joubert receives an anonymous letter at her father’s bookshop, sealed with a distinctive family crest. It contains five words: SHE KNOWS THAT YOU LIVE. Before she can make sense of the message, Minou meets Piet Reydon, a young Huguenot convert with a dangerous mission who needs her help to escape La Cité.
