This three-book collection brings together first-hand accounts of nursing from Christie Watson and Louise Curtis. Spanning hospital wards and emergency care, the set explores the realities of clinical work and the acts of care that shape it, from the earliest moments of life through to end-of-life support.

In The Language of Kindness and The Courage to Care, Christie Watson draws on her experience as a nurse to describe situations ranging from A&E to the mortuary, and the breadth of work carried out by nursing teams. A Nurse’s Story follows Louise Curtis as she recounts the escalation of Covid patients and the wider impact of lockdown seen in A&E, including concerns for missing regular patients and an increase in domestic abuse victims and suicide attempts.

The Language of Kindness

Christie Watson, a nurse for twenty years, recounts a profession shaped by care, compassion and kindness. Her account moves from birth to death, and from A&E to the mortuary, describing moments such as caring for a premature baby, supporting a patient through a heart-lung transplant, and washing the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire before the family arrives.

The Courage to Care

Christie Watson sets out the extent of nurses’ work through a series of examples. These include a community mental-health nurse arranging support for a man with severe depression, a critical-care team treating a teenager with stab wounds, and a military nurse bringing order and focus to an emergency department as a pregnant woman loses dangerous amounts of blood after a car accident.

A Nurse's Story

Louise Curtis describes the period when Covid patients arriving at A&E increased from a trickle to a flood. She also recounts the effects of lockdown on society as seen in the department, including worries about missing regular patients and a rise in domestic abuse victims and suicide attempts as loneliness intensified. The book highlights the compassion and dedication of hospital staff during this time.
