Synopsis

In the late 1880s, Tolstoy began assembling quotations he felt captured “the wisdom of the centuries”, drawing on figures including Lau Tzu, Marcus Aurelius, Buddha and Jesus. Between 1904 and 1910 he issued three versions of that project under the titles Thoughts of Wise Men, A Calendar of Wisdom and The Way of Life; a 1912 edition of A Calendar of Wisdom was later translated into English, published in 1997, and has sold over 40,000 copies.

This volume turns the focus back to Tolstoy himself, gathering inspirational passages that show a writer who could contradict himself while persistently pursuing truth and the meaning of life. The selections range across self-improvement, education, marriage and family, good and evil, peace, war and civil disobedience, with extracts taken from diaries, letters, fiction, essays and conversations.
