Synopses

And a Bottle of Rum

Travelling home through the Romney Marsh, Theodore Terhune and his friend Julia are caught in heavy coastal fog. A lorry offers brief guidance on the narrow roads, before the night ends in an intentional mishap and the discovery of a dead body.

House with Crooked Walls

Terhune is commissioned to research the past of a decaying Elizabethan mansion for its new owner, Dr Vicente Salvaterra. Long abandoned and avoided by locals, the house is prized for its views and shadowed by rumours of a curse.

Work for the Hangman

After the death of wealthy Yorkshireman James Strudgewick, Terhune purchases his substantial library. The coroner rules the drowning an accidental death, but the circumstances invite closer attention.

A Case for Solomon

Terhune is drawn into an old homicide case after encountering the freshly murdered body of seaman Frank Smallwood. The investigation reaches back to a murder dated 15 April 1927.

A Case of Books

When Terhune’s wealthy client Arthur Harrison is found stabbed and his library ransacked, the police suspect the killer was searching for a particular book. The trail turns on what was taken, and what was left behind.

Ten Trails to Tyburn

The death of a well-known local vagrant, “Peter the Hermit”, appears natural at first. Police searching his woodland hut uncover an old Bulgarian newspaper and a bejewelled comb worth substantial money.

Seven Clues in Search of a Crime

Cycling home in Bray-in-the-Marsh, Terhune intervenes to stop an attack on Helen Armstrong. A group of men are after something in her handbag, setting a new puzzle in motion.
