Canongate Books Matt Haig Collection Of 3 Books Set gathers three titles by Matt Haig, bringing together fiction and non-fiction in one set. Moving between an unsettling event in Cambridge, a family defined by strict routines and hidden truths, and a personal account of crisis and recovery, the collection offers contrasting perspectives on what it means to be human.

Across these books, the tone shifts from darkly comic observation to direct, candid reflection. The stories range from a professor who no longer recognises his own life, to teenagers uncovering the reasons behind their family’s self-denial, to an author describing how he learned to live again.

Synopses

The Humans

Following an ‘incident’ on a wet Friday night, Professor Andrew Martin is discovered walking naked through Cambridge and no longer feels like himself. Food makes him feel unwell, clothes baffle him, and even his wife and teenage son seem repellent. Lost among what he sees as an alien species, he hates everyone on the planet, with the exception of Newton, a dog.

The Radleys

Life with the Radleys is shaped by Radio 4, dinner parties with the Bishopthorpe neighbours and a great deal of self-denial. After teenage daughter Clara is attacked on her way home from a party, she and her brother Rowan begin to learn why they cannot sleep, cannot eat a Thai salad without fear of asphyxiation, and cannot go outside unless covered in Factor 50.

Reason To Stay Alive

At 24, Matt Haig’s world collapsed and he could see no way to continue living. This is his true story of coming through crisis, overcoming an illness that nearly destroyed him and learning to live again.

Presented as moving, funny and joyous, it explores how to live better, love better and feel more alive. It is described as more than a memoir, with a focus on making the most of your time on earth.
