Sarah Winman’s three-book collection brings together Tin Man, When God was a Rabbit and A Year of Marvellous Ways. Each novel is introduced through relationships that shape a life, from childhood bonds to the connections that endure into adulthood.

Across the set, the stories move between friendship, family and love, and the ways people respond to change, loss and what comes after. From a painting won in a raffle to a remote Cornish creek, these books explore the moments and encounters that alter everything, sometimes quietly and sometimes all at once.

Synopses

Tin Man

The story begins with a painting won in a raffle: fifteen sunflowers hung on the wall by a woman who believes men and boys are capable of beautiful things. It follows two boys, Ellis and Michael, who are inseparable as they grow up. When Annie enters their lives, it changes nothing and everything.

When God Was A Rabbit

A novel about a brother and sister, centred on childhood and growing up. It takes in friendships and families, triumph and tragedy, and everything in between. Above all, it is about love in all its forms.

A Year of Marvellous Ways

Marvellous Ways is eighty-nine and lives alone in a remote Cornish creek, spending her days by the river with a telescope. Francis Drake, a young soldier, washes up in her creek, shattered by war and broken-hearted.

The story looks at the magic in everyday life and the lure of the sea, alongside storytelling, sloe gin, love and death, and what it means to carry on when grief arrives.
