Synopses

Howl's Moving Castle

In Ingary, where seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility exist, Sophie Hatter draws the attention of the Witch of the Waste and is placed under a spell. With little left to lose, she heads for the moving castle above Market Chipping. The castle belongs to Wizard Howl, who is said to satisfy his appetite with the souls of young girls.

Castle in the Air

Set far to the south in the Land of Ingary, this sequel follows Abdullah, a young carpet merchant. In his dreams he is the long-lost son of a great prince, but he wonders whether it is only a castle in the air. His daydreams begin to turn real when he meets someone described as exquisite.

House of Many Ways

Charmain Baker agrees to look after Great Uncle William’s tiny cottage while he is ill, expecting an easy task. Great Uncle William is also known as the Royal Wizard Norland, and his house bends space and time. Its single door can open onto many destinations, from ordinary rooms to caves under the mountains and even the past.

Charmed Life

Gwendolyn Chant is widely believed to be a gifted witch with remarkable powers, and she is taken to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Her brother Eric, known as Cat, is far less enthusiastic. Unlike his sister, he appears to have no talent for magic at all.

The Magician's of Caprona

In the Dukedom of Caprona, music is enchantment and spells can be as slippery as spaghetti. Two rival families, the Montanas and the Petrocchis, control the magical trade. When spells begin to go wrong, each side is quick to blame the other.

Witch Week

Within the Twelve Related Worlds, only an enchanter with nine lives can control the misuse of magic and hold the title of Chrestomanci. One world sees the city-state of Caprona threatened by the schemes of a mysterious enchanter. Another is a place where magic is outlawed and witches are still burned.

The Lives of Christopher Chant

In the Twelve Related Worlds, the title of Chrestomanci belongs to an enchanter with nine lives, powerful enough to curb rampant magic. The Chants are a family strong in magic. Yet neither Christopher Chant nor Cat Chant can manage even the simplest spell.

Mixed Magics

Chrestomanci is described as dapper, debonair and wise, with nine lives and a strong personality as well as strong magic. This personality echoes through four stories. They include a warlock fleeing to another world, an uneasy partnership between Cat Chant and Tonino Montana, and a young best-selling dreamer who can no longer dream and needs help.

Conrad's Fate

At Stallery Mansion, someone is changing the world, starting with small details that grow steadily larger. Conrad, a twelve-year-old with terrible karma who has joined the staff, tries to uncover who is responsible. He is not alone: Christopher Chant, a fellow servant-in-training from another world, is also investigating, with a mission to rescue a friend lost in an alternate Stallery Mansion.

The Pinhoe Egg

Cat Chant and Marianne Pinhoe find an egg that is exciting, precious and strange, and it was not meant to be discovered. Chrestomanci, Cat’s guardian and described as the strongest enchanter in the world, is certain to take an interest. Marianne’s family of secret rogue witches wants the egg hidden, but their secrets are unravelling and powerful spells are causing havoc across the countryside.
