Across the set, Lefteri writes about lives shaped by displacement, conflict and the search for safety, following characters whose futures are altered by events beyond their control.

From a domestic worker’s disappearance in Cyprus, to a couple forced to flee war-torn Aleppo, to the upheaval of the 1974 invasion of Kyrenia, each story centres on people navigating loss, uncertainty and the hope of starting again.

Synopses

Songbirds

Nisha crosses oceans to build a future for her child. By day she cares for Petra’s daughter, while at night she mothers her own little girl by the light of a phone. Her lover, Yiannis, hunts tiny songbirds as they travel to Africa each winter, and dreams of a new life with Nisha.

When Nisha vanishes, those hopes are shattered. Few people pay attention to the disappearance of a domestic worker, except Petra and Yiannis.

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

Nuri is a beekeeper and his wife, Afra, is an artist, living a life shaped by family and friends in Aleppo. When war destroys what they care for, they are forced to escape. As they travel through a broken world, they face both the pain of their own loss and dangers along the way.

A Watermelon, a Fish and a Bible

In July 1974, the Turkish army invades the town of Kyrenia in Cyprus, bringing an end to life as many people know it, while offering others a chance to begin again. The story follows Koki, long the subject of gossip: people doubt her parentage, her mother dies too soon to silence rumours, and when Koki becomes pregnant with no husband in sight, her future appears decided.
