This collection brings together ten consecutive instalments from Andrea Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano Mysteries, spanning books 11 to 20. Across these novels, Inspector Montalbano faces a succession of cases in Vigata and beyond, while also contending with personal unease, including doubts about ageing and strain in his long-distance relationship with Livia.
The set opens with The Wings of the Sphinx, where a young woman’s body is discovered in an illegal dump and a distinctive tattoo links her to other recent Russian immigrants to Italy. Further mysteries follow, from a horse carcass that vanishes from the beach in The Track of Sand to a dismembered body found in a field of clay in The Potter’s Field. Later entries include a corpse discovered near a yacht in The Age of Doubt, a troubling dawn incident in The Dance of the Seagull, and an anonymous riddle that draws Montalbano into The Treasure Hunt.
The eleventh novel in the series finds Inspector Montalbano unsettled in both work and private life. When a young woman’s body is found in an illegal dump, her identity is unknown at first. A sphinx moth tattoo links her to three other girls with the same mark, all recent Russian immigrants to Italy.
Montalbano wakes to find a horse carcass on the beach near his seaside home, only for it to vanish before his men arrive, leaving a track in the sand. Soon after, Rachele, an equestrian champion, reports her horse missing. The animal was stabled at the grounds of Saverio Lo Duca, one of Sicily’s richest men, who has also lost a horse.
During storms in Vigata, Montalbano is called to the discovery of a dismembered body in a field of clay. With signs of an execution-style killing, the case appears to point once again towards the notorious local mafia.
A chance encounter with a strange young woman leads Montalbano to Vigata harbour and a new mystery. The crew of the yacht Vanna, due to dock nearby, have found a corpse floating in the water with a badly disfigured face. Before long, Montalbano grows suspicious of the yacht’s inhabitants.
At dawn, Montalbano watches a seagull fall from the sky, performing a strange dance before dying. The unsettling scene lingers like an omen as he prepares to leave for a holiday with Livia. Before departing, he heads to the police station to tie up loose ends.
After an elderly man and his sister fire bullets from their balcony onto the street below, Montalbano becomes a reluctant television hero. Days later, a letter arrives containing a mysterious riddle. The message draws him into a perplexing treasure hunt set by an anonymous challenger.
When members of Vigata’s elite are targeted in a series of precisely executed burglaries, Montalbano reluctantly takes the case. It soon becomes clear there are links between the victims beyond their missing possessions. As the investigation continues, he finds himself taken with one of the victims, Angelica.
Montalbano helps his new neighbour, Liliana Lombardo, after the engine of her car is interfered with, and the incident leads to further trouble. Liliana is being targeted by someone with a grudge, while remaining vague about her husband’s whereabouts. At the same time, a bomb explodes outside an empty warehouse in Vigata, raising questions about who the intended target was.
A man reports an armed robbery on his wife that ended with a kiss, prompting Montalbano’s suspicions. As he investigates, he finds that witness accounts do not align. He begins to feel that the stories are not meant to add up.
As his birthday approaches and he feels his age, Montalbano tries to lift his spirits by dealing with a young driver’s road rage. At headquarters, an angry call comes in from a supermarket boss about a robbery. The caller claims Montalbano’s colleague is treating him as a suspect.
