Death in the Dordogne

Market day in the ancient town of St Denis becomes a flashpoint as EU hygiene inspectors descend on France’s markets. Locals respond by hiding contraband cheese and directing their anger at Brussels, while police chief Bruno finds himself sympathetic to their defiance. In a region marked by the memory of Vichy France, the language of “resistance” carries a weight that complicates the present.

The Dark Vineyard

Before dawn in St Denis, Bruno is called out by the town siren to a barn fire that is spreading into the surrounding fields. The unmistakable smell of petrol points to arson, raising the stakes for the local investigation. At the same time, a Californian producer arrives with plans to establish a wine-making business in the valley.

Black Diamond

A long-standing Vietnamese food stall in St Denis market is attacked and wrecked by assailants who appear to be Chinese. The violence suggests organised crime and the beginnings of a Viet-Chinese triad conflict. As murder, illegal immigration and the importation of underage girls for prostitution enter the picture, Bruno faces a case with widening consequences.

The Crowded Grave

St Denis is unsettled by multiple threats: a summit at a local château is targeted by Basque separatists, while animal rights campaigners add further disruption. Matters darken when an archaeological dig uncovers a remarkably preserved skeleton that is far more recent than expected. A Swatch on the wrist and a bullet-hole in the skull make clear that this discovery belongs to a modern crime.
