This hardback collection brings together two novels by Madeline Miller: Circe and The Song of Achilles. Set in the world of Greek gods and heroes, both stories follow characters shaped by exile, loyalty and the demands of destiny.

In Circe, the daughter of Helios grows up scorned and out of place among gods and mortals, until she discovers a power of her own in witchcraft. In The Song of Achilles, Patroclus is sent to the court of King Peleus, where he forms a bond with Achilles that deepens as they train in war and medicine, and as events draw them towards Troy.

Synopses

Circe

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, Circe is born and grows up scorned and rejected. Neither powerful like her father nor like her mother, she finds herself in the shadows, belonging fully to neither gods nor mortals. Her gift is witchcraft, and when it threatens the gods she is banished to the island of Aiaia, where she hones her craft with spells, herbs and wild beasts.

Life in isolation does not keep danger away for long. Among the visitors to her island is the mortal Odysseus, and Circe risks everything for him.

The Song of Achilles

In Greece in the age of heroes, Patroclus, an awkward young prince, is exiled to the court of King Peleus and his son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends him, and as they grow into young men skilled in war and medicine, their bond becomes something deeper, even as Achilles’s mother Thetis disapproves.

When Helen of Sparta is kidnapped, Achilles is called to war in Troy to fulfil his destiny. Patroclus goes with him, unaware of how the years ahead will test what they hold dear.
