British Railways’ Mark 1 coaches were introduced in 1951 as the first standardised railway carriage design, becoming a familiar sight across Britain’s rail network and remaining in production until 1963. Built at locations including Derby, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Swindon, Wolverton and York, the Mk1 family also continued beyond this period in the form of multiple units and non-passenger stock.
This Hornby model recreates Mk1 Brake Force Runner 3091/AD977352 in BR Departmental service. The real coach was delivered in 1959 and converted to an MTA Brake Force Runner in 1986, reflecting the later-life roles Mk1 vehicles took on after withdrawal from widescale passenger service in the 1990s.
