Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach C BR Intercity 12412

Developed for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach became a defining part of modern InterCity travel from its 1989 service entry. This Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach C BR Intercity 12412 recreates the type as an authentically replicated model railway coach, reflecting a design that introduced notable advances over the earlier Mk3 stock.

Built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory between 1989 and 1992, Mk4 coaches incorporated push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways, with a design top speed of 140mph. The design drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, including profiled sides intended to allow tilt up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Following privatisation in 1996, the fleet was sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to successive InterCity East Coast franchise operators, with refurbishment work carried out by Bombardier Transportation for GNER between October 2003 and November 2005 under ‘Project Mallard’.
