Hornby Mk4 Standard Coach D BR Intercity 12413

Introduced for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, the Mk4 coach brought a new generation of InterCity travel to Britain from 1989 onwards. Hornby’s Mk4 Standard Coach D BR Intercity 12413 recreates this distinctive design as an authentically replicated model railway coach, reflecting the Mk4’s role within InterCity East Coast formations.

Built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, the Mk4 fleet incorporated notable changes over the Mk3, including push-button operated plug-type doors and fully sealed gangways. The design drew on the Advanced Passenger Train, with profiled sides intended to allow tilt of up to 6° when paired with newly fitted tilting bogies. Later refurbishment work carried out from October 2003 to November 2005 under ‘Project Mallard’ introduced new seating arrangements and onboard Wi‑Fi for the operator at the time.
