Introduced in 1998, the Class 66 is a six-axle diesel-electric freight locomotive developed by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), a division of General Motors, to meet the UK’s rail freight requirements. The first major order was placed by English, Welsh / Scottish Railway (EWS) for 250 units, with early locomotives built in Canada and the United States and the first arriving in the UK in June 1998. The design was based on the EMD JT42CWR model and later became widely used across UK rail freight operations.
