This three-book set brings together three mysteries by Janice Hallett: The Appeal, The Twyford Code and The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels. Each title centres on secrets, unanswered questions and the search for what really happened, from a small-town death to a long-rumoured literary puzzle and a notorious case revisited years later.

Across the collection, investigations are driven by outsiders looking in: law students working under a QC, a man tracing the roots of his misfortune, and a true-crime writer pursuing a missing interview subject. The stories move through community groups, hidden clues and public fascination, where the truth is obscured by speculation and carefully kept secrets.

Synopses

The Appeal

In the quiet town of Lower Lockwood, the arrival of two guarded newcomers is followed by a tragic death. Roderick Tanner QC assigns law students Charlotte and Femi to review the case, believing the person imprisoned for murder may be innocent and that darker secrets remain hidden. Against the backdrop of an amateur dramatics society’s troubled production of All My Sons and a questionable charity appeal for a child’s medical treatment, the killer has been hiding in plain sight.

The Twyford Code

Edith Twyford was once a celebrated children’s author, but her name is now tied to rumours of the Twyford Code: clues concealed in her books, pointing towards an unknown end. Steve Smith links many of the worst events in his life to Twyford. As a child, he found one of her books marked with strange symbols and showed it to his teacher, Miss Iles, who believed it could unlock the code.

The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels

The Alperton Angels are remembered as a cult that manipulated a teenage girl into believing her newborn was the anti-Christ, and planned to kill the infant before being stopped. The group later took their own lives rather than face trial, while the mother and baby vanished into the care system. Nearly twenty years on, true-crime author Amanda Bailey begins a book on the case; with the Alperton baby now eighteen, finding them could transform her work and revive her faltering career.
