Little House on the Prairie Series 7 Books Collection brings together seven classic stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder about life on the frontier and America’s best-loved pioneer family. Across the series, the Ingalls family travel, settle, and adapt to new places, from the Big Woods to the prairie and beyond.
This collection follows Laura Ingalls and her family through changing landscapes and communities, including school days near Plum Creek, a move west by train, and the challenges of winter in De Smet. The set also includes a new edition of Little House on the Prairie featuring Garth Williams’ interior art in vibrant, full colour, alongside redesigned covers.
In the little house in the Big Woods, the Ingalls family live together with Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura and baby Carrie. Beyond their home are wild animals, from bears and bees to deer and wolves, and life is mostly harmonious, though sometimes fearful. This story is described as a prequel to Little House on the Prairie and On the Banks of Plum Creek.
Laura Ingalls and her family leave their home in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and travel by covered wagon to Kansas. After many days, they choose a place to build their little house on the prairie. Their days are filled with planting and ploughing, hunting wild ducks and turkeys, and gathering grass for their cows, as they adjust to the demands of pioneer life.
After travelling from the Big Woods and the prairie, the Ingalls family settle at Plum Creek. With a town close by, Mary and Laura are able to go to school. The story considers how they will adjust to a busier place after growing up in wilder lands.
Ma and the girls follow Pa west by train. They make their home at a rough railroad camp and plan for their own homestead.
A blizzard cuts the town of De Smet off from the railroad, leaving the community without food or fuel deliveries for weeks. The Ingalls family must eke out what remains of their supplies as the winter continues. As conditions worsen, Almanzo Wilder and a friend set out through the storms to seek help from another settlement.
Laura Ingalls hopes to gain her teaching certificate and is determined to work hard at school. A school exhibition offers a chance to impress, and as she nears her sixteenth birthday she looks towards teaching work at a nearby settlement. Nellie Oleson, described as Laura’s arch rival, is determined to make things difficult.
Teaching at the Brewster settlement, far from her family, is not as exciting as Laura Ingalls expected, and she feels homesick. The winter passes slowly, with only rare drives in Almanzo Wilder’s new pony trap to look forward to. As Laura takes on the responsibilities of earning her keep, her friendship with Almanzo grows into love, ending with a wedding.
