Synopses

Dissolution

Set in 1537, England is undergoing its greatest changes since 1066. Henry VIII has declared himself Supreme Head of the Church, and the country is confronting savage new laws, rigged trials and an unprecedented network of informers.

Dark Fire

In 1540, Matthew Shardlake believes he has fallen out of favour with Thomas Cromwell. He focuses on keeping his legal practice going while trying to stay out of sight.

Sovereign

In autumn 1541, Henry VIII travels north on a spectacular Progress to York for an extravagant submission by rebellious subjects. Already in the city are lawyer Matthew Shardlake and his assistant, Jack Barak.

Revelation

In 1543, Henry VIII is courting Lady Catherine Parr, intending to make her his sixth wife. This time, however, the object of his attention is resisting.

Heartstone

In 1545, England is at war. Henry VIII’s invasion of France has gone badly wrong, and a large French fleet is preparing to cross the Channel.

Lamentation

In 1546, Henry VIII is slowly dying as Protestant and Catholic councillors enter a final struggle for power. The outcome will determine who controls the government of his successor, the eight-year-old Prince Edward.

Tombland

Edward VI is eleven, with his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, ruling as Protector. Radical Protestants are driving the removal of the old religion, stirring discontent among the populace, while the Protector’s prolonged war continues.
