Synopses

Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks

Rogues collects a dozen of Keefe’s most celebrated New Yorker articles, reflecting on his preoccupations with crime and corruption, secrets and lies. The pieces range from forged vintage wines and a Swiss bank whistleblower to an international black-market arms merchant, as well as a death-penalty attorney representing the ‘worst of the worst’.

The Snakehead: An Epic Tale of the Chinatown Underworld and the American Dream

The Snakehead investigates a secret world run by a charismatic middle-aged grandmother who operated a multimillion-dollar people-smuggling business from a noodle shop in New York’s Chinatown. It explores Cheng Chui Ping, also known as Sister Ping, and recounts a decade-long FBI investigation, alongside the pursuit by an often incompetent and sometimes corrupt INS.

The book also portrays a generation of undocumented immigrants and the underground economy that sustains and exploits them.

Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty

Empire of Pain examines the Sackler family, whose name appears across institutions including Harvard and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and whose wealth was long unclear. It details how the family were responsible for making and marketing Oxycontin, described as a catalyst for the opioid crisis, an international epidemic of drug addiction which has killed nearly half a million people.

Presented as a work of narrative reporting, it is described as the story of a dynasty and twenty-first-century greed.
