Holly Webb Maisie Hitchins Series Collection brings together eight mysteries featuring Maisie Hitchins, a young would-be detective living in her grandmother’s boarding house in Victorian London. Maisie idolises the celebrated detective Gilbert Carrington and keeps a keen eye out for cases of her own, often with her faithful puppy, Eddie, by her side.
Across the collection, Maisie follows clues through boarding-house corridors, museum galleries and London streets, tackling thefts, disappearances and unsettling happenings. From missing coins and stolen objects to puzzling break-ins and rumours of hauntings, each story centres on Maisie’s determination to uncover what is really going on.
Maisie rescues a puppy while running an errand and decides to investigate his previous cruel owner. Her enquiries lead her into a wider mystery involving stolen sausages, missing halfpennies and a bicycle chase through Victorian London.
Maisie helps her friend Professor Tobin, who plans to donate his collection to the British Museum, including a rare tribal mask from the Amazonian rainforest. When the Feathered Mask is stolen from the boarding house and only a single feather is left behind, Maisie begins a new investigation.
A new lodger, Mr Fred Grange, arouses Maisie’s suspicions with his odd hours and vague claims about working for a biscuit company. After discovering something precious hidden in his rooms, Maisie tries to expose him, only to find the truth is more complicated and dangerous, leading her into mysteries underground.
At the British Museum, Maisie meets Lord Dacre, whose gold Egyptian scarab beetle has been stolen. The artefact is later found by the Thames, but its ruby eyes are missing, and Maisie sets out to identify the thief.
Alice’s father suffers a run of bad luck when two ships disappear and he loses a great deal of money. Maisie heads to London’s docks to investigate what is happening at sea and to try to save Alice’s fortune.
Maisie and Alice are sent to a country estate while Alice is recovering at home. Warned that the house is haunted, they soon encounter strange noises, smells in the night and a sighting of a ghostly cat-like shape, prompting Maisie to investigate.
Alice vanishes from her new boarding school, leaving behind an inkwell spilled across her desk and a trail of suspicious paw prints. Maisie follows the clues to find her friend before she faces real danger.
When stage star Sarah Massey visits the boarding house, Maisie overhears that a priceless emerald necklace has gone missing. Intrigued, Maisie investigates at the theatre, where appearances prove deceptive.
