The Best of Murakami brings together three novels by Haruki Murakami in a single collection: Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Each book follows a distinct narrative, moving between everyday routines and unsettling, surreal turns, with characters drawn into events that reshape their lives.

Across the set, Murakami introduces parallel journeys, memories triggered by music, and domestic calm disrupted by disappearance and strange encounters. From a runaway teenager and an elderly man who tracks lost cats, to a student looking back on love and loss, and a suburban life unravelled by a missing cat and troubling phone calls, the collection presents three separate stories with their own atmosphere and cast.

Synopses

Kafka on the Shore

Fifteen-year-old Kafka Tamura runs away from home, living under his father’s dark prophesy. Elsewhere, Nakata, an ageing tracker of lost cats affected by a strange childhood affliction, finds his simplified life abruptly overturned. As their parallel odysseys unfold, the world shifts into the uncanny, with talking cats, fish falling from the sky and a forest that shelters soldiers seemingly unchanged since the Second World War.

Norwegian Wood

Hearing a favourite Beatles song sends Toru Watanabe back to his student days in Tokyo and to his first love, Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend, Kizuki. He remembers a period shaped by uneasy friendships, casual sex, passion, loss and desire. When Midori enters his life, Toru faces a choice between the future and the past.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Toru Okada’s cat disappears, and his wife grows more distant each day. At the same time, he begins receiving increasingly explicit telephone calls. As the story develops, his orderly suburban existence of cooking, reading, listening to jazz and opera, and drinking beer at the kitchen table is turned inside out, drawing him into a strange journey guided by a succession of characters with stories of their own.
