This Janice Hallett collection brings together The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels and The Twyford Code. Each novel centres on an investigation driven by unanswered questions, with secrets that have lingered for years and new leads that promise to change what is known.
In The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, the long-remembered tragedy of a cult and a missing mother and baby resurfaces nearly two decades later when true-crime writer Amanda Bailey begins a new book. With the Alperton baby now eighteen, Amanda races to track them down, while rival author Oliver Menzies pursues the same story. The Twyford Code follows Steve Smith as he revisits the legacy of former children’s author Edith Twyford and the rumoured “Twyford Code”, after a childhood discovery and the disappearance of his teacher, Miss Iles.
The Alperton Angels were a cult who brainwashed a teenage girl and convinced her that her newborn baby was the anti-Christ. They believed they had a divine mission to kill the infant, but were stopped when the girl called the police. The Angels later committed suicide rather than stand trial, while the mother and baby disappeared into the care system.
Nearly twenty years on, true-crime author Amanda Bailey begins writing a book about the case. With the baby now eighteen and able to be interviewed, she searches for them as rival author Oliver Menzies follows the same trail.
Edith Twyford was once a world-famous children’s author, and her name is now linked to the rumoured “Twyford Code”: clues said to be hidden in her books, leading to an unknown secret. Steve Smith connects many of the misfortunes in his life to Twyford, beginning with a childhood discovery of one of her books covered in strange symbols.
After showing it to his teacher, Miss Iles, she became convinced it held the key to the code, then disappeared within weeks. Now Steve is determined to find out what happened, and whether she was right.
