This three-book collection brings together Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy, opening with The Blade Itself. The story introduces Inquisitor Glokta, a former fencing champion left crippled by war and now working as a torturer; Captain Jezal dan Luthar, a nobleman and officer more interested in comfort than discipline; and Logen Ninefingers, an infamous warrior with a violent past and an unresolved feud with Bethod, the King of the Northmen.
As events escalate, war threatens in the frozen north and danger gathers in the south. Glokta is drawn into the defence of Dagoska as the Gurkish prepare to attack, while a small group travels east in search of a long-hidden device known as a Seed. In Last Argument of Kings, conflict closes in on the Union itself as power shifts, loyalties fracture, and Bayaz, the First of the Magi, pursues a plan that carries grave risks.
Inquisitor Glokta, a bitter relic of the last war, endures life in a broken body while continuing his work as a torturer. Captain Jezal dan Luthar drifts through an easy life, preoccupied with cards and reluctant training. Logen Ninefingers wakes in the snow with thoughts of settling a feud with Bethod, even as he tries to avoid it, until Bayaz becomes involved and makes their lives more difficult.
War approaches the frozen north, and the Union army is divided by politics and weakened by incompetence, lacking experience, training and, in some cases, weapons. In the south, the Gurkish mass to assault Dagoska, where Glokta prepares for siege while facing threats from within the city and the mystery of a vanished predecessor.
To the east, a small band travels to the edge of the world to recover a Seed hidden for generations, a device with tremendous destructive potential that could change the course of multiple wars, if it can be found and controlled.
The end is coming. Logen Ninefingers may have one last fight left as battle rages across the North and the King of the Northmen still stands firm. Glokta fights a secret struggle where trust is scarce, relying on blackmail, threats and torture.
Jezal turns away from soldiering in search of a simpler life, but glory returns unexpectedly. As the King of the Union lies on his deathbed, revolt and ambition spread, and Bayaz pursues a plan to save the world, with the terrible risk of breaking the First Law.
