The Belgariad is a five-book collection by David Eddings, following Garion, a young farm lad drawn into events shaped by ancient stories and a prophecy handed down through generations. The series centres on the Orb of Aldur, an object of immense power once fought over by the evil God Torak and reclaimed by Belgarath the sorcerer.
As Torak stirs again, Garion travels with Belgarath and Polgara, pursued across the lands by enemies determined to seize the Orb and reawaken their God. Across the collection, Garion begins to understand his place in the prophecy and to control a growing sorcerous power, as a long-foretold confrontation moves towards its conclusion.
Long ago, the evil God Torak fought to obtain the Orb of Aldur, but was defeated and the Orb reclaimed by Belgarath the sorcerer. Garion loves the tale when he hears it from an old storyteller, believing it has nothing to do with him. Yet the stories speak of a prophecy that must be fulfilled, and Torak is stirring again.
Legends tell how Belgarath and his daughter Polgara defeated Torak and imprisoned him in an endless sleep. Now a priest of Torak races to his God with the Orb of Aldur, seeking to reawaken him, and Belgarath and Polgara follow his trail. Garion travels with them, and as the group journeys onward, the power of sorcery grows in him.
Many thousands of years ago, two prophecies came into being and a moment was fixed when only one would determine the future. That moment, a clash between the maimed god Torak and the descendant of the Rivan king, is approaching. Raised as a farm lad, Garion is beginning to grasp his part in the prophecy while working to control his sorcerous power.
Garion and his companions now have the Orb of Aldur and must return it to its rightful home on the pommel of the sword in the Great Hall on the island of Riva. As they cross the lands, Murgo soldiers and Grolim sorcerers try to stop them. Meanwhile, Torak is waking in his dark tomb, ready for the final conflict.
A confrontation prophesied for thousands of years races towards its conclusion. As Garion comes into his heritage as the Rivan King, Overlord of the West, and takes up the Orb of Aldur to protect the land, Torak awakes and his hordes march in his name. While the princess Ce'Nedra mobilises the forces of the free lands, Garion heads towards a duel with Torak on which the fate of the world depends.
