Breadwinner Series 5 Book Set brings together five novels by Deborah Ellis, following Parvana and Shauzia across Afghanistan and beyond. The stories move between life under Taliban rule and later periods as circumstances shift and new threats emerge, including events set in 2021 when the Taliban regain power.
Across the collection, Parvana faces her father’s arrest and the restrictions placed on women and girls, leaving her family confined at home and short of food. She is later separated from her mother and siblings and sets out to find them. Shauzia escapes Kabul and reaches a refugee camp in Pakistan, holding on to hopes for the future. In another instalment, Parvana, now fifteen, is discovered in a bombed-out school and detained by American troops in Afghanistan as a suspected terrorist, remaining silent during questioning.
Parvana’s father is arrested and taken away by Taliban soldiers. Under Taliban law, women and girls cannot leave the house alone, leaving Parvana, her mother and sisters confined at home. With no man to buy food, the family faces starvation.
After Parvana’s father dies, her mother, sister and brother travel to a faraway wedding without knowing what has happened. Parvana does not know where they are, but she knows she must find them.
Shauzia, Parvana’s best friend, escapes her life in Kabul and ends up in a refugee camp in Pakistan. She dreams of seeing the ocean and making a new life in France, but leaving the camp proves difficult. Once she goes, she has no money, no food, and only her dog Jasper with her.
Parvana, now fifteen, is found in a bombed-out school and held by American troops in Afghanistan as a suspected terrorist. A major believes she may be working with the Taliban. Parvana remains silent and does not answer questions in any language.
Set in 2021, the Taliban regain power in Afghanistan and Parvana and Shauzia must flee to escape new dangers from an old enemy. Twenty years earlier, they had disguised themselves as boys to support themselves and their families. After the Taliban were defeated in 2001, it seemed Afghans might rebuild their country.
