Circe and The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller are brought together in this two-book set, pairing two retellings set in Greece’s age of heroes. Each novel centres on a figure shaped by exile, loyalty and the demands of gods and mortals, with stories that move from divine courts to distant shores and battlefields.

In Circe, the daughter of Helios grows up scorned and out of place, discovering a power of her own in witchcraft. Banished to the island of Aiaia, she develops her craft through spells, herbs and the taming of wild beasts, until the arrival of the mortal Odysseus changes what she is willing to risk. The Song of Achilles follows Patroclus, an exiled young prince, as he is taken in at the court of King Peleus and forms a bond with Achilles that deepens over time, before war calls them to Troy.

Synopses

Circe

Born in the house of Helios, Circe is neither powerful like her father nor like her mother, and grows up rejected and in the shadows. She discovers a dark gift for witchcraft, and when it threatens the gods she is banished to the island of Aiaia. There she hones her craft with spells and herbs, taming wild beasts, until the mortal Odysseus arrives and becomes someone for whom she will risk everything.

The Song of Achilles

In Greece’s age of heroes, Patroclus, an awkward young prince, is exiled to the court of King Peleus and his son Achilles. Despite their differences, the two form a friendship that deepens as they grow into young men skilled in war and medicine, even as Achilles’s mother Thetis disapproves. When Helen of Sparta is kidnapped, Achilles goes to war at Troy to fulfil his destiny, and Patroclus follows, as the years ahead test what they hold dear.
