The Wolf Hall Trilogy is a three-novel collection by Hilary Mantel, bringing together Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror and the Light. Set in England during the reign of Henry VIII, the books follow Thomas Cromwell’s rise from his beginnings as a blacksmith’s son from Putney to a central position at court.
Spanning the 1520s through to May 1536, the trilogy traces a period marked by political distrust, shifting alliances and the pressing question of succession. Cardinal Wolsey pursues a divorce the pope will not grant, while Cromwell moves from Wolsey’s clerk to his successor. Later, as Chief Minister, Cromwell’s prospects become bound to Anne Boleyn and the king’s marriage, before Henry’s attention turns to Jane Seymour.
England in the 1520s: Henry VIII has no heir, and Cardinal Wolsey is charged with securing a divorce the pope refuses to grant. Thomas Cromwell enters Wolsey’s service as a clerk and later becomes his successor, portrayed as a political genius with a talent for manipulating people and events, ruthless in pursuit of his interests.
By 1535, Thomas Cromwell is Chief Minister to Henry VIII, with his ascent closely tied to Anne Boleyn, the king’s new wife. As Anne fails to provide an heir and Henry falls for Jane Seymour, Cromwell must find a solution that satisfies the king, safeguards the nation and protects his own career.
England, May 1536: Anne Boleyn is executed by a hired French executioner. Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors and continues his climb to power and wealth, while Henry VIII settles into short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour.
