Dark Princess: A Romance by W. E. B. Du Bois is a novel first published in 1928. This edition is a paperback in the Dover Thrift Editions series.
Matthew Townes, an aspiring OB/GYN, leaves New York City for Berlin after racist rules prevent him from completing his medical studies. There, homesickness gives way to an unexpected meeting with Kautilya, a purple-haired Indian princess, and the two begin an embattled, at times fantastical interracial romance.
Through their relationship, Du Bois explores ideas of race and politics as the lovers work towards liberation from a whites-only world, are separated, and later reunited. Published to mixed reviews in 1928, the novel is said to have been the author’s favourite of all his works.
