Detective Clare Mackay Series is a nine-book collection by Marion Todd, bringing together the first titles featuring DI Clare Mackay. Set in and around St Andrews, the series follows Clare and her team as they respond to escalating investigations, from suspicious deaths to cases that place intense pressure on the local police.

Across the collection, Clare faces crimes that unfold quickly and unpredictably: a hit-and-run sequence marked by numbered cards, a child abduction during a public event, and a security breach within Police Scotland. Other cases begin with uncertain circumstances and develop into wider enquiries, including deaths that may be connected, a shooting at a lodge, and a missing prison transport van. As evidence shifts and new victims emerge, Clare is repeatedly forced to question what she thinks she knows.

Synopses

See Them Run

During a wedding celebration, a guest is killed in a hit-and-run and a card marked ‘5’ is left on the body. DI Clare Mackay, newly moved from Glasgow to join the St Andrews force, leads the investigation. When another victim is struck the next night and a ‘4’ card appears, Clare and her team realise they are racing to stop further murders.

In Plain Sight

A baby girl is taken from a crowd watching a fun run, leaving local police facing a major investigation. DI Clare Mackay and her team work against the clock when they learn the child has a potentially fatal medical condition.

Lies to Tell

DI Clare Mackay is summoned to a secret meeting by her boss, DCI Alastair Gibson, and taken to a secure location in the remote Scottish hills. There she meets ethical hacker Gayle Crichton and is told of a critical security breach originating from within Police Scotland. Clare is sworn to secrecy and must keep Gayle’s identity hidden from colleagues while the source is traced.

What They Knew

On Hogmanay, Alison Reid lets a caller into her home, and her death is later reported. DI Clare Mackay attends the scene, but the initial evidence cannot confirm whether foul play was involved. When a pathologist reports on a post-mortem of a young woman found in the Kinness Burn with similarities to Alison’s case, Clare suspects a killer may be at large in St Andrews.

Next in Line

Gaby Fox’s successful TV career makes her family well known, so locals take notice when her brother and friends book Lamond Lodge for birthday celebrations. Shock spreads through St Andrews when Russell Fox is shot dead on the premises.

Old Bones Lie

A van carrying two prison officers and a convicted jewel thief is reported missing, and police in St Andrews move quickly to find it. When no trace is discovered, they also realise the wives of both officers appear to have left the area. Clare’s team must consider whether this is corruption, a planned escape, or innocent people caught in the crossfire.

A Blind Eye

Local solicitor Harry Richards is found in his car with his throat slit. DI Clare Mackay takes the case and learns Harry was not the upstanding man he appeared to be. When the wife of one of Harry’s colleagues is found dead in her car, Clare realises something more sinister may be happening and must identify who is behind the murders before she becomes a target.

Bridges to Burn

DI Clare Mackay is called to Albany High after a girl’s body is found in what appears to be a suicide, despite her reputation as a cheerful and talented student. Another troubling case also demands attention, involving an elderly man in danger. Before the facts can be established, the investigation shifts again, leaving Clare and her team facing two suspicious deaths and the possibility that their assumptions are wrong.

Dead Man's Shoes

A young man is found dead near a nightclub with marks on his neck associated with the Choker, a killer who has been targeting gay men across the country. The case appears to have reached DI Clare Mackay’s territory, but the victim also has links to notorious local criminals. As more men are attacked and left injured, Clare must act quickly, while her determination for justice creates blind spots that put both her job and her life at risk.
