This 12-book Dork Diaries collection set by Rachel Renee Russell follows Nikki Maxwell through school life, friendships and rivalries. Across the series, Nikki navigates new schools, shifting social dynamics and the complications that come with crushes, competitions and unexpected responsibilities.
From a week on a school transfer programme to a reality TV crew tracking Nikki and her friends, each instalment brings a new situation to manage. Along the way, Nikki deals with her nemesis MacKenzie, supports friends Chloe and Zoey, and faces dilemmas involving the school newspaper, talent events and even a litter of puppies that must be kept secret.
Nikki spends a week at North Hampton Hills through a school transfer programme. She likes the school’s cool, preppy vibe, but discovers her nemesis MacKenzie started there two weeks earlier.
When an animal shelter is too full to take abandoned puppies, Nikki agrees to care for them temporarily. With her parents refusing to allow dogs in the house, she hides the puppies at home and takes them to school in secret, with seven puppies making the plan increasingly chaotic.
MacKenzie is interested in more than reading Nikki’s diary. She takes over to share her own version of events and her “glamfabulous” life, including what she thinks about Nikki and her friends.
After bumping her head, Nikki has a vivid dream where she, Chloe, Zoey, Brandon and MacKenzie take on the roles of familiar fairy tale characters. Nikki wonders whether the dream will turn into a nightmare.
Nikki and her friends are followed by a reality TV crew for a month as they record their hit song. With cameras everywhere, the attention brings excitement as well as unexpected problems.
With the biggest dance of the year approaching, Nikki hopes Brandon will ask her to be his date, but time is running out. She worries he might go with MacKenzie instead, as Nikki, Chloe and Zoey tackle the topic of love.
Nikki learns MacKenzie is writing a gossip column for the school newspaper and fears secrets about Brandon could be revealed. To keep track, Nikki joins the paper and ends up as the advice columnist, Miss Know-It-All, answering letters from other pupils.
Nikki finds out Brandon volunteers at a local animal shelter. When he tells her the shelter may close, Nikki becomes determined to help keep it open, especially after learning a secret about Brandon.
As the school year nears its end, Nikki looks forward to summer plans with her friends and Brandon. A new boy arrives and shows interest in Nikki, leaving her confused and worried about hurting Brandon.
Nikki’s school holds a talent competition, and she looks forward to practising dance moves with Chloe and Zoey. She also hopes to impress Brandon with her singing.
Nikki begins settling into her new school, makes friends and becomes Brandon’s lab partner. After overhearing MacKenzie claim Brandon will take her to the dance, Nikki agrees to help at a children’s party for her little sister, Brianna.
Nikki starts at a new school and wants a fresh start, leaving her “dorky” past behind. However, embarrassing moments and family mishaps make it difficult to change her reputation overnight.
