Edward Marston Ocean Liner Mysteries Collection is a six-book set of maritime mysteries featuring ship’s detectives George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield. Set in the early twentieth century, the stories follow their investigations aboard ocean liners travelling between ports including Liverpool, Southampton, New York, Bombay and Egypt.
The collection includes voyages on well-known ships such as the Lusitania and the Mauretania, with Dillman often working undercover as a passenger on maiden crossings. Alongside the central mysteries, the series also reflects aspects of life at sea, from first-class society to petty crime, as well as the dangers of severe weather. The Ocean Liner series was previously published under the name Conrad Allen and has been relaunched for a new generation of readers.
September 1907. George Dillman sails from Liverpool to New York on the Lusitania’s maiden voyage. Posing as a passenger, he works undercover as a detective hired by the Cunard Line to keep watch for petty crimes.
November 1907. Dillman and Genevieve Masefield depart Liverpool on the Mauretania’s maiden voyage, with Dillman again working undercover for the Cunard Line. Severe weather drives passengers from the decks, and after a crew rescue a first-class passenger is lost overboard.
What seems to be misadventure is soon suspected to be murder, connected to a record shipment of gold bullion from the Bank of England. The Mauretania is described as the largest moving structure at launch, later serving as a WWI hospital and troop ship before being retired and scrapped in the mid-1930s.
Egypt, 1908. Used to the opulence of the Cunard cruise line, Dillman and Masefield are unimpressed by the Marmora, a smaller ship owned by the P&O shipping line.
Bombay, 1909. Dillman and Masefield make their living as detectives aboard extravagant ocean liners, encountering first-class passengers as well as card cheats and pickpockets.
Southampton, 1910. The Oceanic sails for New York, first calling at Cherbourg, France, to collect financier and art collector J. P. Morgan following a continental buying spree.
New York, 1910. Having crossed the Atlantic many times as ship’s detectives, Dillman and Masefield sometimes travel alongside famous passengers, including dukes, duchesses, artists and actors.
