Enid Blyton St Clare’s Collection gathers nine stories across three books, following twins Pat and Isabel as they adjust to life at St Clare’s. As they settle in, the pair face surprises, disagreements and new friendships, gradually learning to recognise when their own decisions cause difficulties and how to put matters right.
As the school terms move on, new pupils arrive with their own talents, secrets and schemes, while everyday routines are shaped by plays, accidents, rivalries and shifting responsibilities. From first days and fresh starts through to later forms and leadership roles, the collection returns to the familiar upsets and rhythms of St Clare’s, with figures such as Mam’zelle, matrons, head girls and classmates playing their part.
Pat and Isabel find St Clare’s more challenging than they expected. After a run of surprises and arguments, they accept that their troubles are largely of their own making and begin to settle in and make friends.
Returning for the Easter term, the twins are determined to be obedient and studious. New girls bring plenty of fun, and Mam’zelle is kept busy.
The twins look forward to their first summer term and befriend Carlotta, who is desperate to keep a secret past hidden. When Prudence discovers it and tells everyone, the class must respond.
In the second form, the twins meet Gladys and Mirabel, who have talents for acting and music. Elsie, the form’s unpopular head girl, learns to be less spiteful.
A new head girl must be chosen, with several candidates in the running. After a serious accident and a school play, the true leaders are revealed.
Pat breaks her arm and misses the first weeks of term. Isabel grows close to new girl Amanda, and Pat wonders how she will feel about the change.
Eileen’s mother becomes the new Matron, and Mam’zelle’s niece Claudine arrives and causes havoc. The twins are drawn in by Claudine’s rebellious plans, but it is unclear whether she will last the term.
Now in the fifth form and nearing the sixth, the girls are still tempted by tricks, escapades and jokes. French girl Antoinette, like her sister Claudine, does not always understand the ways of St Clare’s.
The twins become head girl, and the role proves demanding. Cheeky first formers and cruel Priscilla keep everyone alert.
