Jennifer Hartmann’s three-book collection brings together Still Beating, Lotus and June First in one set. Each story centres on relationships shaped by upheaval, with characters forced to confront what has changed and what remains between them.

Across the collection, the narratives move from an unexpected night that turns into captivity, to the return of someone long missing, and finally to a life redirected by a childhood decision. The set presents three separate premises, each focused on connection, loss and the consequences of events that cannot be undone.

Synopses

Still Beating

Cora goes to her sister’s birthday party expecting little more than a rough morning, but ends up stranded after her wallet is stolen and reliant on Dean, her long-time enemy. She then wakes up in shackles in a madman’s basement, with Dean chained nearby. After years of antagonism, they must work together if they want to survive.

Lotus

To the world, he was the boy who vanished on the Fourth of July; to Sydney Neville, he was everything. Years later, Oliver Lynch returns after being held captive underground for decades, alive but unfamiliar with the world he’s coming back to. Despite how he has changed, both he and Sydney still feel the connection between them.

June First

Brant survives a tragedy only to fall for the one girl he is not allowed to love, leading to what he calls another tragedy. When he was six, his father made a choice that changed the course of his life, making the only girl Brant ever loved the only one he could not have. Even so, Brant remains present for her earliest moments and the milestones that follow.
