This three-book collection brings together psychological thrillers and an epic novel by Louise Doughty: Apple Tree Yard, Black Water and Whatever You Love. Across the set, Doughty explores the consequences of private choices, moral ambiguity and lives reshaped by secrecy, loss and desire.

From a chance meeting at the Houses of Parliament that leads to a dangerous affair, to a man haunted by what he has already done on an Indonesian island, and a mother driven to seek revenge after a devastating loss, each novel follows characters pushed into situations they cannot fully control. The collection moves between intimate psychological tension and wider historical backdrops, with settings that include Europe during the Cold War, California during the Civil Rights struggle and Indonesia during the events of 1965 and the decades that follow.

Synopses

Apple Tree Yard

Yvonne Carmichael has built the life she wanted, with a successful career in genetics, a beautiful home and a stable family life. After meeting a stranger at the Houses of Parliament, she begins a passionate affair that puts everything she values at risk. As she tries to keep the relationship separate, her plans unravel into deeper deceit and a life-changing act of violence.

Black Water

John Harper lies awake in an isolated hut on an Indonesian island, convinced his life may be in danger. He fears less what might happen than what he has already done. In a local town he meets Rita, and they begin an affair, raising the question of whether he can become involved when it may put her at risk.

Moving between Europe during the Cold War, California during the Civil Rights struggle, and Indonesia during the massacres of 1965 and the decades of military dictatorship that follow, the novel explores dark events in recent world history through the story of one troubled man.

Whatever You Love

Two police officers arrive at Laura’s door with news that her nine-year-old daughter, Betty, has been killed in a car accident. When justice is slow to arrive, Laura decides to take revenge and begins tracking down the man responsible. Her grief also reopens old wounds, drawing her back to her love affair with Betty’s father, David, their marriage and his subsequent affair with another woman.

Haunted by her past and driven by a desire for retribution, Laura discovers how far she is willing to go for love.
