This three-book set by Lynne Truss brings together entries from the Constable Twitten Mystery series, set in Brighton during the 1950s. Across the collection, Inspector Steine finds his quiet life as a policeman by the sea disrupted by unexpected investigations and a growing sense that the town is not as trouble-free as it appears.

From a fatal shooting on the opening night of a new play to a summer season where even the most routine questions can lead to something darker, these stories follow cases that draw in Constable Twitten and his colleagues. With a mix of burglaries, unexplained deaths and a string of killings linked by an unusual weapon, the set centres on crimes that unsettle Brighton and test the local police.

Synopses

A Shot in the Dark

Brighton, 1957. Inspector Steine enjoys a low-stress posting by the sea, until a new constable arrives and begins looking into a series of burglaries. When Constable Twitten is sent to the theatre, he ends up seated beside a theatre critic who is shot dead during the opening night of a new play.

The Man That Got Away

In summer, the Brighton Belles are ready to help holidaymakers with any question, large or small. Their work takes a darker turn when attention is drawn to a young man lying in a deckchair, with blood dripping from him.

Murder by Milk Bottle

Three victims who appear to have no connection are killed using the same unusual murder weapon: an AA patrolman, a would-be beauty queen and a BBC radio personality. Constable Twitten, Sergeant Brunswick and Inspector Steine struggle to make sense of the pattern as the town grows alarmed and the local newspaper follows the story closely.
